Me Myself and I

In the article "Self-Reliance," Emerson makes the claim that all you need to do in order to succeed is be yourself. Don't conform!! Question authority!! It is just that easy.

I however, strongly disagree with this. I do believe that one should have their own views of things. I do think that there is definitely something to be said for standing up for yourself and being your own person. But to say that this is all a person needs is extremely...extreme.

We just finished talking about the story of Stephen Cruz, who was repeatedly told to do the exact opposite, keep quiet, stay in line, and he would rise. How does that real life story line up with the idea of being self reliant for everything? Well...it doesn't. A person cannot expect to have everything they want by simply not conforming.

I completely agree with your disagreement. The opinions that Emerson was voicing were definitely to extreme for most people to follow, especially people who want to be successful society-wise. I like how you connected Emerson back to the reading about Stephen Cruz. Props to you.
