The two stories of Ragged Dick and Stephen Cruz are deceptively similar. The main character is poor. The main character pulls himself up and changes himself in order to succeed, and obtain their piece of American dreampie.
They both reach it, the success they set out for. They go farther than anyone would have predicted, and achieve more than their peers. But where the huge difference in the pieces shows itself is how the men react to the success.
Dick is happy just to have his chance, just to finally have a good job. He does not feel any guilt that he really only received the job because the boss owed him a debt, he rather embraced his new situation and was ready to meet it head on. Stephen Cruz however, seemed to fight his advancement with every step. Though he was moving up, he believed that he was only being promoted because he was mexican, and when a new job offer came up that he was qualified for, he was simply brushed off with excuses for why he was not able.
In this way the two men reacted to their situations in strikingly different manners, though their stories could be viewed as somewhat similar.

I like that you started out with how the two stories are similar, because I think in general the blogs concentrated more on the differences. I agree with you that the real difference is in how they reacted to their success (although I didn't voice it that way myself). Good job being more eloquent than I could.
