Dick saved a life, became a hero, and got a new job all in the space of a few hours. How is it that all this came about? The author is implicitly arguing that it takes luck to become succsesful.

Without luck, or for those of you who 'don't believe in luck,' chance, Dick would have never even set foot on the boat in the first place. It just so happened that he was on the boat, that he saw the boy tumble overboard, and that he was able to save his life. It was chance that the boy was the son of a rich man who could reward him handsomely rather than a poor man who could only offer gratitude. Yes, Dick was courageous in his decision to jump, but he would have never even reached the point of jumping without the help of luck determining his circumstances

Yes I agree, many things could have made it so that Dick wasn't on that boat with that man. And what if the father was simply a man that could only offer gratitude? Dick still would have jumped in the water and rescued the boy. In no way did he show any signs of being a good accountant, but luckily both Dick and that family decided to be on that boat.
