Ah an opinionated blog! Too bad my opinion will be the same as everyone else's. Well whatever. I think that the changes Wright is making by moving north to Chicago are positive. Though it will not be a land of complete equality, it will be an improvement from his current state of treatment in Memphis. In Memphis, Richard is always worrying about how he is interacting with the whites around him, and refers to it as a type of 'tension' in his life. He gets so caught up in sweating the little things like making sure that he moves out of the way for a white person even when they are still far away, that he struggles with completing the tasks he is asked to carry out while watching his step. Not surprisingly, this makes it very hard for him to keep his jobs. While Chicago will not be candy land, or even a theme park, it will be better. It will give him more opportunity for a longer term job, and hopefully he will be able to capitalize upon the situations he can find and place himself in. So for me, this is deserving of a pat on the back and two thumbs up for having the courage to move to try to find a better life.
