Gatto basically hates school, even though he was a teacher for 30 years, which really doesn't match up in my mind, but I'm not about to pick apart this dude's reasons for career choices. Even though I love the idea of the perpetual snow day just as much as the next kid, I do think that school is somewhat necessary. However, school hasn't always been around, and the human race has done pretty well ... mostly ... (http://tinyurl.com/2vbl8d). Anyways, to a point I do think that Gatto is on point with this article, but as with most essays we read, I think he takes it too far to one extreme. I mean, right now in the world the way it works, school is essential. Gatto is more looking at the larger picture though, saying that in the long run people won't remember anything they learned, not anything from the classroom, at least. This is true. Its already true for me as a Junior trying to remember things from my freshman year. However, by taking these classes, we are launching ourselves to the next levels. No, I don't like that thats how it works, I don't think any student does. If I had it my way, we would go to school and take different classes about specific skills we will need for a job or just life in general. I would love to have a class about cooking, and pool maintenance. But when your realistic about it, we really aren't that far removed from the one-room schoolhouses, and I don't think we'll move much farther away any time soon.
