Linda was definitely surprised when she made it to the north. Not in the way of, "SURPRISE!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!" surprises, but more in the way of, this is not what I thought it would be surprises. While she was in hiding at her grandmother's, she had tons of time to daydream about what her new life in the north would be like. But when she arrived, she was saddened and disappointed to find that much of the racism that she faced in the south was still very present in the north. Even to further her disappointment, her owner continued his dogged search, and she still had to live warily for a long period of time before she was officially free. And even her freedom came at a price she had dreamt of not paying, 300 dollars. She had wanted to be set free because that was her God-given right, but instead she was purchased just like she would have been in the south. Her life was much more complicated than she had dreamed it would be, and much less "free" than she had hoped.
